Temporary repairs have allowed the Sanibel Island Causeway bridge to reopen ahead of schedule. The bridge was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian and more work will have to be done, but residents will now be allowed back on to the island at specific dates and times.
Red tide, that may be a result of Hurricane Ian is popping up along Sarasota County shorelines. The Florida Department of Health says the algae is being detected at beaches that include Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Venice Beach and other areas. Two more Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program locations will open Friday for residents of Polk and Hardee counties. You must preregister on the SNAP site, and must not already be getting any food assistance benefits through the regular SNAP. Registration will begin on Friday, and over the phone interviews will start Sunday.
The American Bar Association is also offering help to those impacted by Hurricane Ian with free legal help hotline for counties that include Pinellas, Hillsborough, Polk and Sarasota counties, as well as Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Hardee, Highlands, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, Putnam, St. Johns, Seminole and Volusia counties. The Skyway 10K returns in March, with registration opening next week. The sixth annual run across the Sunshine Skyway to benefit the Armed Forces Families Foundation will accept registration applications Oct. 24-31. The spaces sell out very fast, and participants will know Nov. 4 if they get a space for the event on March 12, 2023. You can check on how to apply here.
The Cross Bay Ferry is back for trips between Tampa and St Petersburg with ticket booths on both sides of the Bay. This year, and extra month of service has been added, along with a later departure time from Tampa around 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The Urban Land Institute has named the St Pete Pier as one of the sixth best urban designs in the world. One other in the U.S. received that honor, Essex Crossing in New York City. The other winning designs are Anken Alley in Shanghai, China; Enabling Village in Singapore; MÉCA in Bordeaux, France, and Norblin Factory in Warsaw, Poland.
